In the year 2000, Dr. Boyton creates a super-robot in his deceased son's image. He calls the robot Astro Boy. Astro Boy can swim oceans, leap over mountains, even fly into space on his own power. However, Astro Boy can't replace his son. Dr. Boyton becomes dissatisfied with the boy robot and disowns him. Astro Boy is befriended by Dr. Packadermus J. Elefun of the Institute of Science, who guides him through his adventures. 1. The Birth of Astro Boy
Dr. Tenma, Director General of the Science Ministry, loses his son Tobio in an accident. He decides to create the robot Astro Boy, who looks just like Tobio, using the best of the Science Ministry's technology.

2. Colosso
It is the year 2000 and robots have been put in charge of making other robots when there are no longer enough people to do the work. Astro Boy dreams of having a real mother, just like human boys. The robot workers are making an experimental new robot named Colosso who goes berserk and escapes shortly after coming to life. The only hope is for Astro Boy to stop him before he cause too much trouble. (In the original Japanese version, Colosso was named "Frankenstein")

3. Expedition to Mars
Astroboy is selected to lead a search party to find the survivors of the first manned expedition to Mars. This meets strong objection from the spaceship's captain, who protests taking orders from a robot.
