Office hours with a Baltic Sea view instead of Caribbean waves: Not entirely by choice, former ship’s doctor Nora Kaminski ends up on Rügen. The 42-year-old physician is grappling with financial troubles. Her savings barely cover a room in a “characterful, old captain’s house,” where hot water is not guaranteed, and her eccentric landlord, Matthias Samland, gives her the cold shoulder.

Nora Kaminski lives under the same roof as her practice partner, Dr. Richard Freese, just like in their student days. Things get cramped when Nora’s now-grown son, Kai, moves into the doctors’ shared flat. The law student from Berlin claims he’s on Rügen to finish an important term paper. So far, though, only the title is written on the cover page. Something doesn’t add up.

Nora Kaminski must defend herself against false accusations from her time as a ship’s doctor and swallow her pride. Big questions about the future also loom for Nora’s son, Kai, who wants to drop out of his law studies.
